Kendall Charcoal is close to a true neutral charcoal. Its saturation reads at only 4 percent, which is well under the 10 percent line where a color starts to show an obvious cast. So what you have is a dark gray with the barest warm lean rather than a color that swings clearly warm or cool.

The hue sits at 45 degrees, in the yellow-to-tan zone, so when the undertone does surface it shows as a soft greige warmth, never a blue or green flash. That warm-neutral quality is what keeps it from feeling cold and clinical the way many charcoals do.

Test it against a pure white card and a cooler blue-gray at the same time. Next to a crisp white it will look slightly earthy and soft; next to a blue-gray like Flint AF-560 it will read distinctly warmer and browner. Always judge it on the actual wall, since at this depth the lean is subtle and lighting drives it.

With an LRV of 13, Kendall Charcoal reflects very little light, so the room's exposure matters more than it would for a mid-tone. In strong, direct daylight it opens up and shows its soft warm-gray character. In dim or indirect light it deepens toward near-black and loses its subtle warmth.

North-facing rooms get cool, even light that will make it read cooler and heavier, so it is best there when you want a cocooning, library feel. South-facing rooms bring warm sun that lifts it and reveals the greige lean. East and west rooms shift through the day, warm and glowing in their peak hours and much darker at the opposite end.

Bulb choice pushes it either way. Warm bulbs around 2700K bring out the earthy softness and are the safer pick. Cool daylight bulbs flatten it toward a colder, more slate-like gray, which can feel stark in an already dim space.

At LRV 13 this is a statement and contrast color, not a whole-home light. Used on every wall of a well-lit room it creates a moody, enveloping study or den, which is exactly where it earns its reputation. In a darker or smaller room, that same depth can close the space in, so many people reserve it for one feature wall instead of four.

It is a strong cabinet color, giving kitchen islands and built-ins real weight while staying warmer and friendlier than black. On trim, doors, and shutters it frames lighter walls with a heavy, tailored line.

Exteriors are a natural fit. It works on siding, shutters, and especially front doors, where its depth reads as considered rather than loud. Pair it with clean white trim outdoors for the classic charcoal-and-white contrast that suits traditional and farmhouse facades alike.

For trim and ceilings, a bright white gives the cleanest contrast. Chantilly Lace OC-65 at LRV 92 is crisp and cool, while White Dove OC-17 at LRV 85 is softer and echoes Kendall's warm lean, making it the more harmonious of the two.

For a lighter second wall color that keeps the scheme warm, Revere Pewter HC-172 at LRV 56 is a proven greige partner that lets the charcoal act as the anchor. Edgecomb Gray HC-173 at LRV 63 does the same job a touch lighter.

For accents, Hale Navy HC-154 at LRV 6 adds a deep blue counterpoint on a door or cabinet, and Wrought Iron 2124-10 at LRV 6 pushes almost to black for a tone-on-tone, high-drama pairing. Warm wood tones, brass, and matte black hardware all sit comfortably against it.

Against Chelsea Gray HC-168, the difference is depth. Chelsea Gray sits much lighter at LRV 22 and reads as a mid-tone warm gray you can use on full rooms in average light. Kendall Charcoal at LRV 13 is markedly darker and more dramatic, better as a contrast or feature color. Choose Chelsea Gray when you want charcoal's character without the room going dark.

Flint AF-560 at LRV 12 is a near-identical depth but leans cool and slate-blue where Kendall leans warm-neutral. Side by side, Kendall looks browner and softer; Flint looks crisper and cooler. Pick Flint for a modern cool scheme, Kendall for a warmer traditional one.

Farrow and Ball's Down Pipe No. 26 at LRV 11 is a close alternative that carries a clear blue-gray cast, so it is the choice when you actually want that cool blue direction rather than Kendall's neutral warmth.
