About greige

Greige earned its place the honest way: it solved a real problem. Gray-only walls went cold and corporate; beige-only walls went dated and yellow. The band in between flatters oak floors, marble counters, brass, black steel, and almost any fabric you put in front of it. That flexibility is why the same five or six greiges appear in half the new-construction specs in America. This page holds the whole range — light, mid, and dark — cross-matched across every US brand we track.

The Three Greige Bands and What Each One Is For

Light greige (LRV 50 and up) is the whole-house band: Agreeable Gray, Edgecomb Gray, Revere Pewter. It reads as a soft neutral backdrop and lets furniture carry the room. The mid band (LRV 35–50) — Anew Gray, Amazing Gray, Pavestone at its top edge — reads as an actual color on the wall; use it in dining rooms, offices, and bedrooms that get decent light. Dark greige (LRV under 35) is an anchoring color: Urbane Bronze on an exterior or a front door, Iron Ore on an island or accent wall. The mistake is using a band one level too dark for the room's light — a mid greige in a north-facing hallway behaves like a dark one.

Undertones: The Only Thing That Gets People Repainting

Every greige leans somewhere. Green-cast greiges (Analytical Gray, Grassland families) read crisp and slightly organic — they love plants and natural wood. Violet-cast greiges are the dangerous ones: charming on the chip, distinctly purple under cool LED bulbs at night. Cream-cast greiges (Accessible Beige territory) read cozy and traditional and pair with warm incandescent-style lighting. The test that saves you: paint two 2-by-2-foot samples on opposite walls, then look at them at noon, at dusk, and under your actual evening bulbs. If a greige is going to betray you, it does it after sunset.

Reading LRV Before You Commit

LRV — light reflectance value — tells you how much light a color bounces back, from 0 (black) to 100 (theoretical white). It predicts behavior better than any photo. Above 60, a greige washes toward off-white in bright south light. From 50 to 60 you get the classic soft-neutral wall that still reads as a color in the corners. From 35 to 50 the color is unmistakably present and the room needs either good windows or deliberate lamps. Below 35 you are decorating with darkness on purpose — beautiful, but commit to it with lighting and contrast trim. North-facing rooms subtract roughly 10 LRV of perceived lightness; south-facing rooms add it.

Pairing Trim, Ceilings, and the Rest of the Palette

Greige walls want a warm white trim — Alabaster, White Dove, Swiss Coffee — at least one clear step lighter. Stark cool whites (Extra White, Chantilly Lace) make most greiges look dirty rather than warm. Ceilings: flat white softened with a drop of the wall color keeps the transition quiet. For the rest of the scheme, greige is famously easy: navy, olive, terracotta, charcoal, and nearly every wood tone work. The one pairing to test carefully is cool blue-gray fabric against a cream-cast greige — the wall can read tan next to it.

The Mistakes That Turn Greige Against You

Picking from the chip alone — undertones only show at wall scale. Matching the trim undertone wrong — cool trim beside warm greige reads as two mistakes instead of one choice. Ignoring the floor — an orange-oak floor pushes every greige warmer; gray LVP pushes it cooler. Whole-housing a mid-band greige — what feels rich in the living room feels heavy in a windowless hall; step the hall one band lighter in the same undertone family. And chasing trend photos — a greige that glows in a photographer's staged south light will not do that in a real north bedroom.

Greige paint — frequently asked questions

What is the most popular greige paint color?+

Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray (SW 7029, LRV 60) — the most-specified wall color in US new construction for years running. Benjamin Moore's Edgecomb Gray (HC-173) and Revere Pewter (HC-172) are the designer-side equivalents.

Greige vs beige — how do I tell which one I'm looking at?+

Put it next to a true gray and a true tan. Beige reads warm-tan first and gray never. Greige flickers — in daylight it looks softly gray, in lamplight softly warm. If the chip reads clearly warm in every light, it's beige.

What greige works in a north-facing room?+

Go one band lighter than you think and warmer in undertone: Edgecomb Gray (LRV 63) or a cream-cast greige. North light is cool and flat, so it exaggerates gray and violet undertones; a green- or cream-cast greige compensates.

Can I use greige in a bathroom or kitchen?+

Yes — greige handles both well. In kitchens it pairs with white, wood, and painted cabinets alike; in bathrooms pick a satin or eggshell sheen for wipeability and check the undertone under your vanity bulbs, which are often cooler than the rest of the house.

What accent colors go with greige walls?+

Navy, olive and sage greens, terracotta and rust, charcoal, and warm woods are the reliable partners. For metals, brass and matte black both work — brass leans traditional, black leans modern.

Do I need different greiges for interior and exterior?+

Usually one step darker outside: full sun washes color out, so an interior mid greige reads light on siding. Urbane Bronze, Gauntlet Gray, and Pavestone are the standard exterior picks, with a light greige reserved for trim or board-and-batten.
