Farrow & Ball Lamp Room Gray

As a mid-tone gray, Lamp Room Gray is versatile enough for full rooms yet has enough depth to feel considered rather than builder-plain. On living room and bedroom walls it gives a calm, enveloping backdrop that is not as pale as a typical light gray. In a hallway or study it reads more architectural and holds up well against strong daylight.

It is a strong cabinet and joinery color. On kitchen cabinets, a built-in, or a paneled wall it looks solid and refined without going as dark as a true charcoal. Painted on trim, doors, or a fireplace surround it adds quiet contrast against lighter walls.

Outside, its mid LRV makes it a workable exterior body color or a smart window and door color on a pale house. As a front door color it is understated rather than bold, so pair it with crisp white trim if you want the door to register.

At an LRV of 39 this is a mid-tone, so it has real range depending on how much light a room gets. In a bright, sunny space it looks lighter and cleaner, close to a soft silver. In a darker room or a shaded corner it deepens and can look almost charcoal-adjacent by evening.

North-facing rooms get cool, even light all day, which lets the faint cool lean come forward and can make Lamp Room Gray feel crisp or slightly steely. South-facing rooms flood it with warm light that lifts it and softens any coolness. East light makes it fresh in the morning and moodier by afternoon, while west light does the reverse.

Bulb choice matters just as much. Warm white bulbs around 2700K keep it soft and calm; cooler 4000K bulbs sharpen it and emphasize the gray. Because it moves this much, always live with a sample through a full day before committing.

Manor House Gray (No. 265), LRV 35, is the closest neighbor and slightly darker. It carries a touch more depth and cool charcoal character, so it feels a little more serious in the same room. Choose Manor House Gray when you want more contrast against white trim, and Lamp Room Gray when you want a softer, more flexible mid-gray.

Pigeon (No. 25), LRV 34, is darker again and has a clear green-gray character. Where Lamp Room Gray stays neutral, Pigeon commits to a soft, muted green that suits nature-led schemes. If you specifically want green, go Pigeon; if you want a color that stays out of the way, stay with Lamp Room Gray.

Worsted (No. 284), LRV 33, leans warmer and greiger. Side by side, Worsted looks like the warm option and Lamp Room Gray the cooler, cleaner one. Warm-lit rooms often flatter Worsted, while cooler or brighter rooms suit Lamp Room Gray.

For trim and ceilings, reach for a clean high-LRV white. All White (No. 2005), at an LRV of 84, keeps trim bright without adding a yellow cast and lets the gray read as gray. Strong White (No. 2001) is a slightly softer alternative if you want less contrast.

For an adjoining lighter wall color, Cornforth White (No. 228), LRV 60, is a natural step up in the same quiet family, useful for open-plan spaces where you want flow rather than a hard break.

For depth and contrast, Down Pipe (No. 26) at LRV 11 makes an excellent cabinet, lower-wall, or accent color that stays in the gray family. If you want a bolder statement, Hague Blue (No. 30), LRV 6, is a classic front door or accent pairing that reads rich against the soft gray. To warm the scheme, add Setting Plaster (No. 231), LRV 56, in a soft furnishing or an accent room. Warm woods and both brass and blackened metals all sit comfortably with it.
