Chic Taupe is what a greige looks like after it grew a body: brown and gray in the same gallon, deep enough to hide scuffs, grayed enough not to go chocolate. At LRV 32 it is a real mid-tone — Home Depot calls it a brown with a sepia undertone that can read dusty taupe depending on the light. South sun keeps the balance. What Color Is Chic Taupe, Really?
A muted mid-tone taupe sitting right between brown and gray — not decorator-cream, not office gray. Behr files it as N230-4 in the Neutral family, a numbered-deck color rather than a Designer Collection launch. Home Depot's line is blunter than the pretty name: a brown with a sepia undertone that, depending on the light, may appear as a dusty taupe on the walls. Behr's own November 2023 Color of the Month post called out a subtle rosy edge. That mix is the color. The gray keeps it from going chocolate; the brown keeps it from going office; the sepia-rosy note stays quiet until the light goes cool or the sun hits it low.
The number people miss is LRV 32. Agreeable Gray sits at 60, Accessible Beige at 58, Perfect Taupe at 42, Mesa Taupe at 41. Chic Taupe is a full step darker than the mid-taupes people sample first, and two steps darker than the Instagram greiges. On four walls the chip's polite taupe becomes a real mid-to-deep tone: enough color to hide scuffs, enough gray to stay dusty rather than brown, and enough depth that a dim room will feel held — or, if you forget lamps, dull. Plan for it to read darker, and slightly dustier, than the card.
Undertone in one line: warm brown-gray first, a whisper of sepia-rose second — never green, not a cool greige. Cool north light and 4000K LEDs strip the brown and leave a drab dusty taupe some owners would have used a lighter greige to avoid. West sun and 2700K lamps pull the sepia forward until it looks almost mushroom-brown. Both versions are the same gallon being honest about the room.
Where It Shines
Give it real daylight, warm wood, and a clean white trim and Chic Taupe does the job mid-taupes are supposed to do: the walls have color, the room looks finished, and nobody has to name the paint. Living rooms and bedrooms with two windows are its home turf — grounded, calm, and flattering to oak, walnut, linen, and brass. Satin on cabinet bodies or an island is the designer-looking move that does not require a saturated color. Outside, the same depth holds up in sun instead of washing to beige. The gray in it keeps the brown from going chocolate; the brown in it keeps the gray from going office.
Where It Fails
Almost every regret about Chic Taupe follows one of three scripts, and all three are visible before the first coat. None of them are a bad batch — but if your room matches one, this is not your color, and a bigger sample will only confirm it.
This is the one-star room. Cool, flat daylight kills the brown and Home Depot's dusty-taupe warning comes true: at LRV 32 the walls go drab gray-brown, and the corners sink. The thin owner chatter that exists — a Facebook note that it is a little dark, an Instagram clip about it being too dark — is this room talking. The paint did not fail; the light did. Step up to Perfect Taupe (LRV 42) or Pashmina (LRV 44), or commit to warm lamps before you commit to the gallon.
On the chip it can pass for a warm greige. On four walls the brown and the sepia are unmistakable — depth multiplies undertone. If your goal is gray with a little personality, this is too much taupe. Look at Shiitake (LRV 32) for the warm-gray version at the same depth, or Dorian Gray (LRV 39) if you want greige with real weight and less brown.
Gray LVP, gray-washed wood, and 4000K bulbs sit on the blue side of neutral. Next to them Chic Taupe's brown drains out and the dusty-sepia is what you get — a slightly dirty mushroom that looks like the walls and the floor are arguing. Warm the bulbs to 2700K–3000K, put a large sample over the actual floor, or pick a cooler gray that matches the flooring instead of fighting it.
Room by Room
With south or west light it is the calm mid-taupe that makes a worn sectional and oak floors look decided. Eggshell on the walls, Polar Bear or Alabaster on the trim in semi-gloss. One small north window and no lamps? This is not the living-room color — go lighter.
The depth is an asset here. It wraps the room instead of bouncing around, and under 2700K bulbs the sepia-brown comes forward so it feels restful rather than gray. Matte or eggshell; keep a lamp on each side of the bed so corners do not sink into drab.
An accent wall behind a bed or sofa is where LRV 32 earns its keep: enough contrast against a lighter greige or cream to look chosen, not leftover. An open dining room that borrows living-room light is a natural fit, and the mid-tone hides chair-rail scuffs. A closed, lamp-only dining room needs the bulbs at 2700K or it goes dusty at dinner.
Behr sells this color as cabinet enamel for a reason. Satin Chic Taupe on lower cabinets or an island under Polar Bear or Alabaster walls reads custom without a saturated color. A full kitchen of these walls can feel heavy next to white quartz. Test it at night under the actual under-cabinet lights — cool LEDs will pull the drab gray-sepia.
Unlike paler taupes that bleach in full sun, LRV 32 holds a dusty stone read from the street. Pair the body with Polar Bear trim and a dark door — Hale Navy or Iron Ore — and walk the sample around every elevation. The shaded north side will read a step browner than the sunny south side. That shift is the color, not a bad batch.
An open hall that sees daylight from both ends can carry it and will hide fingerprints. A windowless interior hall at LRV 32 is a tunnel. Basements and closed north bedrooms are where the drab-brown reviews would come from. Use it in the rooms with windows and step up to Perfect Taupe or Agreeable Gray in the dark connectors.
Your Light Is the Risk
Warm, steady sun holds the brown and the gray mute in the same frame. The sepia-rosy edge stays quiet. This is the light the color was mixed for.
Cool gray daylight strips the brown and leaves a drab dusty taupe. Fine if you half-wanted gray; disappointing if you wanted warm taupe.
Cooler and slightly rosier in morning shade, sandier and more mushroom through west afternoon. Sample it at 8am and at 5pm before you buy — both reads are the color.
2700K lamps pull the sepia-brown and it goes cozy, almost mushroom. 4000K LEDs sharpen the gray and flatten it to drab dusty taupe — swap bulbs before you repaint.

That is not fame. It is a numbered-deck taupe sitting next to Dry Brown while Perfect Greige and Pashmina get the blog ink.
Here is why that obscurity is useful. Chic Taupe is grayed enough to behave like a neutral and brown enough not to look like last decade's gray, and at LRV 32 it still looks like a color on the wall. The catch the pretty name does not advertise is the same one Home Depot printed: depending on the light it may appear as a dusty taupe. Sample big. If your room is warm and daylit, you get the balanced mid-taupe the Color of the Month pitch was selling. If it is not, you get the warning.
Chic Taupe With Wood Tones and Floors
Warm wood is the easy yes. Oak — including honey and orange builder oak — walnut, and butcher block all sit comfortably against it because the gray mute cools the orange instead of stacking more yellow on top. Pale white oak is safe. Cream carpet is fine.
The one honest no is a cool gray floor plus cool bulbs. Gray LVP, blue-gray tile, and gray-veined quartz pull the brown out, and the walls go dusty sepia.
