Vinyl Siding paint calculator
Vinyl siding can be painted, but only with a vinyl-safe topcoat — and only in colors lighter than or equal to the original. Dark colors absorb heat, soften the vinyl, and warp the panels. Coverage runs ~250 sq ft/gal because vinyl is smooth but the lap edges add area.
Estimates round up to the nearest quart and are based on Kompozit's published coverage. Buy slightly more for touch-ups and color changes.
Light colors only
Vinyl manufacturers void warranties if you paint dark over light. The Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of the new color must be equal to or higher than the original. White, cream, light gray, light blue — fine. Charcoal, navy, deep red — wrong choice.
Vinyl-safe acrylic only
Standard exterior acrylic is OK in cool climates with light colors. For darker shades or hot climates, use a paint specifically labeled vinyl-safe — these have heat-stable pigments that don't catalyze vinyl warping.
