KILZ Tribute is the best wall paint Walmart sells, and that’s the honest frame for it. At $20–28 a gallon it’s a low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold paint-and-primer with a lifetime warranty, which is a serious spec sheet for a budget tier. It covers cleanly in lights and pastels, survives a kitchen wipe-down, and goes up the same afternoon you buy it. Where it loses: deep and saturated colors need two solid coats, the self-priming claim does less than the name promises, and the finish doesn’t have the richness or burnish resistance of a $50 wall paint. Strong value pick. Not a premium one.

Buy this if: you’re repainting a rental, a starter home, or bedrooms in light-to-mid colors and you want a real paint-and-primer for the price of bargain paint. What Is KILZ Tribute?

KILZ is a Masco brand, the same parent that owns Behr, and most people know the name from the primer aisle. The white KILZ can is a stain-blocking staple. Tribute is KILZ trying something different: a full interior wall paint, not a primer, sold mostly through Walmart and Sam’s Club rather than the paint store. That retail choice is the whole strategy. No paint-store markup chain means KILZ can put a 100% acrylic, low-VOC, lifetime-warranty wall paint on a shelf for the price of commodity builder-grade.

In the KILZ lineup, Tribute is the consumer wall paint. The KILZ name above it covers primers (KILZ 2, KILZ Original, KILZ 3, Restoration). Tribute is the topcoat side of the house, aimed at the homeowner who’s already in Walmart on a Saturday and doesn’t want a second trip to a specialty store. “Tribute” covers more than the wall paint, and the wrong can will disappoint you. This review is the interior wall paint and primer. Read elsewhere if your job is different.

If you’re painting cabinets and you grab the wall-paint Tribute, it’ll go on but it won’t hold up to handles and fingernails the way the Trim, Door & Cabinetry enamel will. What It Does Well

• Real value at the Walmart price. This is the headline. A 100% acrylic, low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold paint with a lifetime warranty for $20–28 a gallon undercuts almost everything with comparable specs. The closest big-box rival, Behr Premium Plus, runs $28–35 and doesn’t carry GREENGUARD Gold across the board.
• Clean coverage in lights and pastels. Painting a beige room a soft white, a pale sage, or a warm greige? Tribute often pulls it in one coat with a 3/8-inch microfiber roller. The hide is genuinely good at the light end of the deck, which is where most budget repaints live.
• Low odor and a same-day room. The low-VOC formula means the smell on application is mild and the room is liveable that evening. For a nursery or a bedroom you’re sleeping in the same night, that matters more than buyers expect.

Where It Falls Short

• Coverage in deep and saturated colors. This is the consistent knock, and it’s real. Going from a light wall to a deep navy, a true charcoal, or any high-chroma color, one coat reads thin and blotchy. Plan on two full coats, sometimes a tinted primer underneath for the deepest tones. The “up to 400 sq ft” number is a light-color figure; in dark colors you’re closer to 250–300 with proper film build.
• The self-priming claim oversells it. “Paint and primer in one” sounds like you can skip priming. You can, on a sound previously-painted wall. You cannot over bare drywall, water stains, rust bleed, tannin from knots, or a glossy old finish. For those, prime first with a dedicated KILZ stain blocker. Self-priming paint seals a prepped surface; it does not block the stains a real primer is built for. If you’re fighting water stains on a ceiling, Tribute alone won’t do it.
• Finish richness and wear. Over a five-year forever-home horizon, the gap shows. Over a three-year rental cycle, it doesn’t.

A lifetime limited warranty on a $22 gallon of paint sounds too good, so read what it covers. Like Behr’s version (same Masco playbook), the Tribute warranty backs the original purchaser, on a properly prepared interior surface, applied per label, when the failure is a manifest paint defect. It is product replacement, not a labor remedy. KILZ or Walmart will replace the can; nobody pays you to repaint the room.

What that excludes in practice: failures from substrate problems the paint wasn’t meant to fix (peeling old paint that releases, moisture behind the wall, mildew in a room you didn’t seal). Keep your receipt and document the prep. Without those, the warranty is a marketing line on the can, not a check in your hand. It’s a real reason to pick Tribute over an unwarranted bargain paint. Just don’t read it as a promise the paint never fails.
