The Fast Verdict
Worth it in one narrow lane: sound, previously painted walls going the same color or light over light, primed spec-house drywall, and ceilings, at $18–24 a gallon — about the cheapest tintable paint Lowe's sells. It sprays at a production pace, the dead-flat sheen touches up without a halo, and the zero-VOC label means a tenant sleeps behind it the same night. It is not worth it anywhere else, because the can has no primer in it: one separate primer coat on a patch or a color change erases the $5-a-gallon saving over Valspar 2000 several times over. And there is no satin, which ends the conversation for most rental specs before price enters it.

Which Valspar 4000 Are You Actually Buying?
Three cans wear this number at Lowe's, and several of the latex SKUs — the ready-mixed whites especially — carry a second name, Valspar Contractor Coat, on the shelf tag. Same paint, two names. The alkyd, though, is a genuinely different product, and grabbing it for a bedroom wall is how a one-evening job becomes a three-day airing-out.

Application Settings That Work
- Brush
- Brushes and rolls fine at a contractor pace, and dead flat is forgiving of lap marks. The thin body drips and spatters more than a premium gallon, so keep the roller loaded rather than overloaded and put a real drop cloth down.
- Airless
- This is production paint and the airless is its natural home. The thin economy body pushes through a sprayer at ceiling-crew pace without thinning, and the 5-gallon size exists for exactly that. Spec houses and ceiling runs are where 4000 earns its shelf space.
- Primer
- Nothing is built in — this is the whole story of the line. PVA primer on bare drywall and every patch, a stain-blocking primer over water, smoke, or tannin marks, and a tinted primer under any real color change. If the job needs any of those, price 2000 first; the built-in primer usually makes it the cheaper paint by the time the wall is done.
Dry Times and the Four-Hour Recoat
Touch dry in one to four hours and a four-hour recoat, quoted at 77°F and 50 percent humidity, with a 50 to 90°F application window — the identical schedule to 2000 one rung up. Valspar's label calls the recoat fast, and it is, against an alkyd's 24 hours; against Ultra's 2-hour recoat a shelf over it is half speed. Plan two coats — Valspar recommends them — and start in the morning so the second coat is not going on in a cold evening room. The zero-VOC base is genuinely low-odor: a tenant can move back in the same evening a turn finishes, which is the one spec row where 4000 reads better than its bigger sibling.

When It Goes Wrong, and How to Fix It
Every drywall patch flashed through the finished wall
Why it happens. This is the missing primer collecting its bill. Joint compound drinks paint at a different rate than the painted wall around it, and at 30 percent eggshell solids there is not enough film to bury the difference. 4000 self-primes nothing — Valspar's own page says new or bare surfaces need a separate Valspar primer.
The fix. Spot-prime every patch with a PVA drywall primer before the first coat — or buy 2000, whose built-in primer exists for exactly this job. Rolling a third coat of 4000 over flashing patches costs more than either fix.
A color change still looks patchy after two coats
Why it happens. At 26 to 30 percent solids in the sheens people buy, each pass leaves the thinnest film Valspar sells. Going white over white nobody notices. Covering tan with gray, every bit of missing film is missing hide.
The fix. A tinted primer under the color does more than a third topcoat. Honestly, the better fix is upstream: on any repaint that changes color, the $5 step up to 2000 is cheaper by the time the wall is done.
A shiny burnished track appeared where the wall gets wiped
Why it happens. The thinnest film on the ladder polishes fastest. A sponge at switch height or over a stove shines up 26-to-30-percent-solids paint inside a year, and no economy latex survives a scrub schedule.
The fix. A damp cloth and a light touch is all this film takes. If the wall gets cleaned on a schedule, no contractor gallon is the answer — step to Ultra with ScrubShield and be done with it.
The store handed you a can that says Contractor Coat, not 4000
Why it happens. Lowe's lists a number of 4000 SKUs — particularly the ready-mixed flat and high-hide whites — under the Valspar Contractor Coat name. Same line, same specs, different tag.
The fix. Check the small print on the label and the product number. If it is the waterborne interior latex in Dead Flat, Eggshell, or Semi-Gloss, you have the right paint. The can to actually watch for is the 4000 Alkyd — that one is a different product entirely.

Coverage, dry times, tint bases, and can sizes are the same paint's worth of logistics on the two contractor lines — the primer decides it. On any repaint with patched drywall or a new color, 2000 goes on in two passes where 4000 needs a primer coat first, and a $22 gallon of PVA plus an hour of rolling wipes out the $5-a-gallon saving several times over. On a clean same-color turn, nothing needed priming anyway, and there 4000's saving is real money you should take. 4000's two honest wins: the zero-VOC label for an occupied unit, and the lowest sticker in the store. And on any wall somebody lives against, skip both contractor cans — Ultra's 100% acrylic resin, ScrubShield, and 2-hour recoat remain the best-value dollar in the Valspar lineup.

Valspar 4000 vs 2000, which should you buy?
2000 for almost every repaint. It carries a built-in primer and higher volume solids in every shared sheen — 40 percent against 38 in flat, 33 against 30 in eggshell — plus a satin sheen 4000 does not offer, for about $5 a gallon more. 4000 wins only when nothing on the job needed priming anyway: sound walls, same color or light over light. There, the $5 a gallon is free money.
Does Valspar 4000 have primer in it?
