How to Choose the Right Paint Finish
Matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss — what's the difference and when should you use each?
Picking a finish is just as important as picking a color. The right finish hides imperfections, holds up to scrubbing, and looks great in any light. The wrong one can leave you frustrated.
The Five Common Finishes
Matte / Flat
Zero shine. Best for ceilings and low-traffic adult bedrooms. Hides imperfections beautifully but is harder to clean.
Eggshell
A soft, low sheen. The most popular choice for living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms.
Satin
A subtle pearl-like sheen. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, and kids’ rooms because it wipes down easily.
Semi-Gloss
Noticeable shine. Standard for trim, doors, and cabinets.
High-Gloss
Mirror-like. Used for accent furniture, front doors, and statement trim.
Quick Reference
- Bedrooms / Adult living areas → Matte or Eggshell
- High-traffic family spaces → Eggshell or Satin
- Kitchens / Bathrooms → Satin
- Trim, doors, cabinets → Semi-Gloss
- Statement pieces → High-Gloss
TIP: Higher sheens highlight wall imperfections. If your walls aren’t perfectly smooth, lean toward eggshell or matte.
